Benedict Roff-Marsh has released The Indie Musician’s Guidebook, a free ebook for independent artists, available now on Ko-Fi as donationware.
The author reached out directly to let us know that the guidebook is once again available online after being tied up in publishing limbo for years (by the way, Benedict, if you’re reading this, I responded to your email but received an error message).
You can grab The Indie Musician’s Guidebook for free or send a donation if you find it useful.
This 600-page PDF is packed with insight on creating, marketing, and surviving as an independent musician in a constantly evolving (and often unfair) music industry.
It covers everything from the mindset you’ll need to various useful tricks for marketing, composing, mixing, and mastering. And there are also tips on staying sane when things get rough.
I think resources like this are always welcome, especially when they offer a no-BS perspective on building a music career without relying on a record label.
It’s also worth pointing out that this was written long before the flood of AI-generated “how to make it in music” ebooks. What you get here is original, hard-earned advice from someone who’s actually done the work.
Roff-Marsh mentions that the book gained some attention after its original release years ago, enough to attract a publisher. Unfortunately, it then got stuck in production delays, so he’s decided to release the original version to the public—with typos and all.
In addition to the book, readers get access to a private Facebook group where they can share their work and discuss the ideas from the guide. The group is moderated to keep out spam and self-promotion, so it should be a genuinely useful community.
You might also know Benedict from his work with Higher Hz, where he developed plugins like Hz Delay and Hz Multiplier. He has tons of practical experience in both the creative and technical aspects of music production, which makes this guidebook especially valuable.
If you’re into this kind of material, I also highly recommend checking out Simon Taylor’s articles on Bedroom Producers Blog. Simon is the author of Audio Mastering in a Project Studio and offers similarly thoughtful advice for indie producers.
You can download The Indie Musician’s Guidebook now on Ko-Fi. It’s a free PDF, and you’re free to donate whatever amount feels right.
In terms of compatibility, the ebook is available as a standard PDF and should work on any device that supports digital books.
