Ahhh, ghost production. Sounds mysterious, right? Well, that’s because it is. Behind-the-scenes producers cranking out huge hits while laying low — it’s the unseen side of this mad, crazy industry. Is it worth it? Is it unethical? While ghost production has never been my main squeeze, I’ve made tens of thousands of dollars doing this on the side, with minimal effort. At its core, ghost production is the result of increased demand for music. Professionals in the industry have trouble keeping up and as a result, a unique phenomenon emerged to fill this gap – the ghost producer. These elusive figures work their magic…
How to use two compressors on vocals. Raw vocal recordings can be uneven, thin, or harsh — making it difficult to get them to sit in the mix. One of the most trusted techniques used by pro engineers and producers involves using two compressors in series. Both the UA 1176 Classic Limiter Collection and the Teletronix® LA-2A Leveler Collection are a perfect combination to smooth things out. This method has been used for decades, thanks to its ability to preserve nuances while delivering punchy, professional sound. Let’s explore how this duo can transform your vocal recordings, and how you can use it…

Speaking to followers months after announcing on Instagram that she’d reached her “weight release” goal in January, Lizzo divulged which specific changes she’s made to have a healthier relationship with food. For one, the hitmaker no longer drinks “two to three” large Starbucks beverages each day, a switch she said she believes cut out 1,200 calories from her daily diet, according to People. The “About Damn Time” singer…
Wiz Khalifa, who unfortunately recently revealed he’s fond of the scientifically disproven flat Earth conspiracy theory, is letting fans get a look behind the scenes at the finance-focused aspects of his art. In the same Joe Budden Podcast interview during which he flat-Earthed into headlines, Wiz also spoke about his going rate for features and live performances, resulting in some undeniably impressive figures.“They’re still the same,” Wiz told Budden and crew when asked about his rates during peak “See You Again” popularity. “250, 250. Oh, you talking about for a show or a verse?”From there, Wiz clarified that the $250,000…
Eugene “Big U” Henley apparently believes his ties to President Donald Trump could be the key to walking free as he sits in jail awaiting trial on sweeping RICO charges in Los Angeles. Prosecutors say the group operated like the mafia, using threats, extortion and murder to maintain control. Federal authorities are pushing to…

Article Content It’s safe to say that every working producer has one or more MIDI controllers in their studio. While these can be used to drive software synths and automate parameters in the box, they can also control desktop synths, which are basically synthesizers without the keyboard. One major benefit of these boxes is their small footprint. You can have several devices at your disposal without cluttering your space with redundant keyboards. A good controller will typically have more keys and a variety of MIDI knobs and sliders that can be used to drive several devices simultaneously with some simple…
Waves Audio has launched the Free Plugin Pack, bundling nine free plugins and virtual instruments into one convenient download. Waves Audio Free Plugin Pack is available for Windows and macOS users. While most of the included plugins were available for free on previous occasions, this is the first time they’ve been packaged together. Speaking of versions, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Waves is offering future updates for these plugins for free. Usually, Waves’ update policy requires you to pay for plugin updates…
When you’re building a sound, do you plan your modulation from the start, or does it happen naturally as you tweak? Often, the creative process is quite organic. I usually start with a basic patch and leave room for exploration and experimentation, which allows me to discover modulation settings I hadn’t planned from the outset. This spontaneous approach often leads to unique and unexpected results. However, there are times when I have a clear vision of the final sound. In those cases, I plan the modulation from the very beginning, mapping out specific routes that enhance the intended character. This…
