Angela Yee spoke about her relationship with former Breakfast Club co-hosts DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God.
In a recent interview with Carlos King, Yee was asked if there’s still a friendship between them before explaining that it’s now merely a cordial interaction.
“It’s more like a ‘hi, bye’ thing if I see them,” Yee said near the 52-minute mark in the video linked above, while saying that even Envy and Charlamagne don’t seem to be spending much time together outside of work.
“They both have their own lives and their own families and their own things that they do and, like, many kids. I don’t even know how many kids everybody has at this point,” she added.
When King asked if she misses them, Yee laughed and said, “They’re still right down the hall,” but then clarified, “I wouldn’t say that I miss them. I really am happy in the space that I’m in.”
She continued, “Those early mornings are no joke. I don’t care who you’re working with. I don’t care if it’s my best friend, it’ll make you not be friends. I’ll say that because it’s just a lot, and it’s a lot when it’s so many different people weighing in on things.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Yee, who left The Breakfast Club in December 2022, revealed that she had been thinking about leaving the morning show prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I already had been talking to iHeart[Radio] about it. I also knew when I came in that I would not want to do this forever. Like, I came from having my own show. And so I knew that at some point I would get back to that, but I was like, ‘Well, let’s see what happens with this situation.’” she recalled. “It’s a morning show. I had never done FM radio before. People didn’t even think I could do it coming from Sirius [XM]. And so I did it and then I was like, ‘Alright, I’m ready to do something else.’”
Yee pointed to the exhausting early morning schedule as one of the factors that played a role in her decision.
Once she was nearing the end of her contract, Yee says iHeartRadio offered her a new time slot, which eventually became Way Up with Angela Yee.
However, she had to keep the news a secret from her co-hosts until their bosses broke the news to them.
“In radio you really can’t tell anyone what’s happening because it’s all top secret,” Yee explained. “So you gotta think when you’re taking a time slot, some people are losing a time slot. So even when we started The Breakfast Club, I signed my contract the day before we started—the night before.”
Despite the secrecy, the atmosphere wasn’t awkward when she returned to work following the announcement.
“Everybody was happy,” she said, adding that they congratulated her and coordinated the rollout of the announcement together, including the now-infamous tweet reading, “The breakfast club as you know it is officially over 🫶🏽.”
Yee was replaced by comedian Jess Hilarious in the third chair slot. During Jess’ maternity leave, she was replaced by former TMZ reporter Loren LoRosa.
Tension between the women boiled over when LoRosa continued to work as a co-host and producer for the show following Hilarious’ maternity leave.
