Analogy Instruments has released Mothership Lite, a free sample-based virtual instrument plugin for macOS and Windows.
Based on the same concept as their earlier release, AnaMatrix Lite, this new instrument offers a taste of the full Mothership plugin. Both instruments are built on a collection of multi-samples captured from hardware synths.
Like its predecessor, Mothership Lite is built with Maize Sampler, although you wouldn’t guess it from the interface alone. This is easily one of the nicest-looking Maize-based plugins I’ve seen.
The GUI is super stylish and intuitive, with all the usual Maize Sampler features nicely laid out and fully integrated into the front panel. Big kudos to whoever designed the interface.
Under this slick hood, Mothership Lite features a collection of 12 presets sampled from classic analog synthesizers. You basically get a preview of the larger 1GB sound library offered in the full version, which is identical to the freebie in terms of functionality. It only provides more sounds.
The included free presets sound very nice. It’s all about classic analog synth tones with Mothership Lite, and it’s definitely worth the download if you want to add some of these classic sounds to your DAW.
That said, the instrument is limited by being a rompler, and you don’t get the flexibility of an actual synthesizer.
If you’ve used Maize Sampler plugins before, you’ll know what to expect here. You get very basic but functional modulation controls, ADSR envelope shaping, and a handful of onboard effects, including delay, chorus, reverb, and distortion.
Effect quality is what you’d expect from Maize Sampler: decent enough for quick tweaks, but nothing mind-blowing. The chorus and delay are quite usable, while the reverb is serviceable for layering ambient tones.
The distortion, on the other hand, is a bit harsh. It’s good enough as a basic distortion effect, but I’d suggest reaching for a third-party distortion plugin for better results.
The preset bank covers a small but useful range of analog synth sounds. You get a set of basslines, pads, leads, and some textured synth tones. There’s nothing groundbreaking here, but the presets nicely capture classic analog sounds.
If you enjoyed AnaMatrix Lite, this is essentially more of the same, with a different color scheme and sound palette. And that’s not a bad thing. It lets you build a small but cohesive library of free analog-flavored instruments.
Mothership Lite is compatible with macOS and Windows, available in VST3 and AU plugin formats. You’ll need to complete the Gumroad checkout to download.
If the 12 included presets leave you wanting more, the full version of Mothership expands the library to 100 patches with over 1GB of samples.
