UVI has made its Darklight IIx vintage-inspired three-instrument virtual suite available for just $19, down from $99, in an 81% off deal exclusively available at Audio Deluxe.
Darklight IIx includes a synth, drum machine, and multiple-phrase sequencer.
The release appears to be based on the Fairlight CMI IIx synth, sampler, and DAW that debuted in 1979.
The Fairlight CMI IIx was highly sought after, and the retail price of the synth could reach in excess of $100,000 at the time, depending on the configuration.
Audio Deluxe’s deal on the Darklight IIx suite expires soon, at approximately 04:30 (UTC +0) on March 16, 2026.
You can track how much time is left via the countdown timer on the Audio Deluxe product page.
The original Fairlight CMI IIx featured on the records of countless luminaries such as Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Herbie Hancock, Jean Michel Jarre, and many more.
UVI set out to create an instrument inspired by the Fairlight CMI IIx. They eventually expanded the project to create three instruments (synth, drum machine, sequencer), which recreate the functionality of modules featured on the original synth.
UVI aimed to recreate the personality of the original instruments and include the raw, lo-fi character of the original unit.
The devs didn’t aim to make a one-to-one recreation of the Fairlight CMI IIx modules, though.
I think it’s safe to say user interfaces and workflow have come a long way since 1979, so UVI has improved the functionality as well as expanded the depth of the control scheme to push the instruments into new sonic territory.
UVI launched Darklight IIx all the way back in June 2012, so the plugin itself is almost getting into vintage territory like the hardware that inspired it.
Although I have to say, for a plugin that’s aiming to recreate sounds and aesthetics from 1979, perhaps the age of the plugin won’t be quite as noticeable compared to some other releases going for more modern sounds.
UVI really went all out on the vintage aesthetic. Having done a recent play-through of Fallout 1, the interface kinda looks like a Pip-Boy to me.
The all-green central control panel is not the easiest way to present the controls, as it kind of swirls into one at first glance.
They are replicating the look of the original Fairlight CMI IIx interface, so vintage purists may dig the vibes, though.
