From Variety of Sound comes epicVerb mkII, a free early-reflection-based reverb plugin for Windows.
When Variety of Sound releases a new plugin or update, I like to imagine Windows users dancing and punching the air, like the Microsoft team did when launching Windows 95. Please don’t tell me otherwise.
In any case, a Variety of Sound release is always a real treat.
This time, we have the successor to epicVerb, an excellent reverb plugin that first appeared well over a decade ago.
epicVerb mkII is a freeware plugin, available in VST and VST3 formats for Windows.
epicVerb mkII features significant upgrades for enhanced realism.
Much of that realism comes from the plugin’s six early reflection modes: Hall, Plate, Room 1, Room 2, Reflex, and Echo FX.
epicVerb mkII uses early-reflection models to generate reverberation that develops with a natural character.
The solo piano demo on the download page is great because it’s the sort of performance that can easily go one of two ways: too dry and lacking depth or too washy and lacking definition. The piano sounds like it’s still in the room and in the moment.
This new version of the plugin also features improved reverb algorithms. The dual-engine architecture blends delay-based techniques with advanced algorithmic processing.
Although I’m not a Windows user, the thing I appreciate most about Variety of Sound plugins is that they always seem to find that sweet spot.
It’s easy to go too far with any effect, but in terms of realism, VOS gets the blend of clarity, depth, and positioning just right here, and that excellent judgement is a theme across all VOS plugins.
Besides setting your mode and times, etc., you can further shape the reverb with tail damping and ER tail modulation. Whatever the length of the reverb tail, you can always maintain a natural-sounding end.
Additional upgrades for mkII include updated filters, shelving filter options, a resizable GUI, and a new preset browser for a speedier workflow.
