Minimal Audio has released Poly Flanger, a musically intelligent flanger plugin for macOS and Windows.
Priced at an introductory $29 (regularly $49), Poly Flanger expands the traditional flanger concept into more musical territory. Instead of relying solely on sweeping comb-filter movement, it aligns its resonances to musical pitches, so the effect can follow your track’s key and scale.
Poly Flanger is a polyphonic comb filter with up to eight independent voices. Each voice can be tuned and quantized to a chosen scale, meaning the resonant peaks generated by the flanger sit in key rather than drifting unpredictably.
To be honest, I’ve never used a flanger like this one. To call it a flanger on steroids is an understatement. It’s an incredibly versatile musical tool dressed like a flanger, and I had a blast while testing it.
Poly Flanger transforms what is usually a typical modulation effect into something that can generate arpeggios, stacked intervals, and chord-like movement from a single source.
You’ll use the scale and note controls to adjust how the flanger responds to your music.
The Scale section lets you define a root note and scale type, with optional voicing restrictions such as intervals, triads, extended chords, or pentatonic notes.
The Note Rate parameter syncs pitch changes to your DAW tempo, creating anything from fast arpeggiated patterns to slower harmonic shifts. You can also lock the scale settings between presets, which is useful when browsing sounds within an existing project.
The main controls are there to help you shape the character of the resonance.
Frequency (switchable between Hz and MIDI note mode) sets the base pitch, while Pitch offsets it within the selected scale.
Span distributes voices across musical intervals for chord stacking, and Stereo spreads them across the field with subtle detuning for width.
Feedback increases the intensity of the resonant peaks, moving into resonator-style tones at higher settings, and Damping rolls off high frequencies for a warmer response.
Three styles are available: Classic (traditional even and odd harmonics), Hollow (inverted with odd harmonics and saturation), and Vapor (a more smeared character) .
Modulation is handled via an internal LFO with selectable shapes (sine, triangle, ramp, square), optional BPM sync, morphable waveforms, and per-channel randomization. You can reduce the Modulation depth to zero for static tuning, or quantize it so that even randomized motion remains rhythmically and harmonically aligned.
Poly Flanger ships with 80 presets designed around harmonic flanging and tempo-synced movement.
The plugin is compatible with macOS 10.11 and higher (including Apple silicon) and Windows 10 and above. It runs in 64-bit AAX, AU, VST2, and VST3 formats in all major DAWs.
