Krystal Dynamics is a new developer, launching with several new plugins for macOS and Windows, and best of all, they are absolutely free!
Before we get into the plugins, a quick word on the Krystal Dynamics website. The website launched a few weeks ago, and all appears to be fine, but my antivirus software hates it.
I know that antivirus software can flag websites for a million reasons, and not all of them are too meaningful, so I only bring this up in case some of you share a similar experience in the comments.
Additionally, I can see others are using the site and plugins without issues, but it gives the dev a chance to address anything that might be affecting some users.
Anyway, on to the plugins.
The three new plugins are KrystalField, KrystalClip, and KrystalComp.
Each plugin is available for free in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
KrystalField is a dynamic processor with dual compression engines at its core. The dual-engine design allows simultaneous downward and upward compressions, with a level of precision that makes it suitable for mastering.
The nice-looking interface offers a straightforward layout that features target-based threshold controls. The user-friendly approach provides independent Ratio/Knee controls for upward and downward compression, while the central Attack and Release controls are global.
Other notable features include Hard/Soft clipping modes, Mix control for parallel processing, 20ms lookahead delay, and a real-time waveform display.
Next up is KrystalClip, which follows the same clean, simple GUI design approach and works well.
KrystalClip is a multi-mode clipper with three saturation algorithms, providing varied characteristics.
Along with the Threshold control, you have a Slope control to adjust the clipping curve.
The clipper offers up to 4X oversampling.
Again, you have a Mix control for parallel processing, and you can see everything with a nice real-time waveform display.
The last plugin is KrystalComp, a precision compressor plugin with RMS and Peak detection modes.
In addition to the standard compression controls (Threshold, Ratio, Attack, and Release), you have a variable Knee control and flexible sidechain processing.
KrystalComp offers internal and external sidechain input, and a sidechain EQ with LP, HP, and bell filters.
You can also audition the sidechain signal with the monitor button.
Since we had three freebies in one post, it’s pretty short and sweet for now, but I like Krystal Dynamics’ approach to design and workflow, and I’ll be looking at these more.
Let us know how you get on in the comments.
