Daniel Gergely has updated Spirals, his creative pitch-shifting delay plugin, introducing a new free version alongside an improved preset browser and a host of performance upgrades.
If the name sounds familiar, that’s because we covered the free beta of Spirals back in 2022. The concept was promising even then, but it’s come a long way since.
The newly released free version of Spirals gives you access to the core sound engine with no time limits, no signups, and no strings attached. It’s a fully usable plugin, and it’s perfect for adding shimmer reverb, pitch-shifted delays, and dreamy textures to your sounds.
In the free version, you get 2x oversampling, resonant filtering, and the ability to freeze audio. But my favorite feature is the ability to generate crazy pitch-shifted echoes that sound amazing on pads or rhythmic loops.
I also liked how polished the plugin has become. I reached out to Daniel to ask what’s changed since the old version, and received a very long list of improvements.
Spirals is now five times faster than the original beta, with smooth delay time changes that no longer introduce pitch artifacts.
The filter section now includes saturation when pushed, and there’s an updated collection of 15 factory presets that load automatically inside the plugin.
One of the biggest workflow upgrades is the new preset browser. It’s much easier now to tag, favorite, search, and organize your presets. Presets are a simple but always very welcome improvement, especially when working on larger sound design projects.
An updated user manual is also available on the site for those who want to dig deeper into the plugin’s features.
If you find yourself reaching for Spirals often, you can upgrade to the full version for $30. The upgrade unlocks tempo sync for delay times and higher oversampling rates (up to 8x), which can help clean up high-frequency artifacts when pitch shifting.
It’s a straightforward upgrade path and a good way to support the developer if the plugin becomes a go-to in your toolkit.
One important note: if you’re still using the original beta version (pre-v1.1), you should render any important sounds before updating. The plugin has evolved significantly, and your old presets may not sound the same.
Spirals is available in VST3 and AU formats for Windows and macOS (including Apple Silicon). Both free and paid versions offer free updates throughout the v1.x cycle.
You can download the free version of Spirals directly from Daniel Gergely’s website, no registration required.
