Freq-2 is a sample-based instrument with some of the most inspiring synth presets I’ve heard recently, all captured in high detail and packed into a neat Kontakt interface.
The plugin is based on over 220 sound sources recorded from 22 analog synths handpicked from Dez Wright’s personal collection.
The sampled synths include classics like the Moog Memorymoog, Rhodes Chroma, Yamaha CS60, and modded Roland Juno-106. The raw sounds were processed through boutique analog gear and effects before being curated into a Kontakt instrument.
The interface uses a dual-layer architecture. Each patch uses one or two of the available sound sources, which can be blended using an XY pad or macro knob.
Horizontal movement engages an “Exciter” multi-FX chain, while vertical movement blends between layers A and B. This allows you to create custom layered combinations and apply quick tone shaping without needing to dive into menus.
Freq-2 includes 350 presets, many crafted by Dez Wright himself, along with additional contributions from guest sound designers. These presets are organized into common categories, including pads, basses, keys, leads, arps, and more.
The built-in tagging system also marks “Randomized” presets, which are generated using the plugin’s randomizer feature.
The randomize function plays a central role in Freq-2’s workflow. It not only picks random sound sources, but also reconfigures parameters like envelopes, filters, LFOs, and FX chains. It’s a super-fast way to come up with new patches, and it often leads to combinations that feel less predictable than traditional presets.
That said, fine-tuning is typically required post-randomization, especially for pitch or modulation-heavy results.
Other core features include a shaping section with standard subtractive controls (filter, envelope, detune, pan), and an FX tab that houses chorus, delay, and a reverb module with nine types.
Reverb types are reportedly modeled on actual hardware units from Dez’s studio, contributing to the “placement-ready” sound the developer emphasizes.
There’s also an arpeggiator and “Character” section that introduces distortion, bit reduction, and analog-style noise for more edge or texture. Velocity-sensitive dynamics are available in select presets, with multi-sample depth varying across sound sources.
If you’re looking for professional and ready-to-use synth sounds, this is currently one of the best options on the market.
Freq-2 runs in the free Kontakt Player, which means you can access it even without the full Kontakt license. The library weighs in at 8.4 GB and requires Kontakt Player 7 or newer.
