Obsidian is a creative sound design tool that transforms your audio in unexpected and often dramatic ways.
And honestly, it’s one of those creative plugins that doesn’t really fit a traditional category. Think of it more like a texturizer that modulates your audio rather than a standard effect unit.
At the heart of Obsidian is its XY pad, which controls a mix of modulation effects like bitcrushing, spectral delay, formant shifting, and other “secret sauce” FX behind the scenes.
But the idea behind Obsidian is that you don’t tweak individual parameters. Instead, you just move the XY node around and discover cool, complex results in real time.
I love this kind of workflow in sound design. Yes, sometimes having granular control over every parameter is required, but I also enjoy using simpler coloring tools like this one.
Instead of fine-tuning a dozen parameters, I can load up a loop or sound and intuitively explore textures with the XY pad until I land on something inspiring. It’s a fast way to inject energy and character into your sounds, especially if you’re working with something that’s too static or boring.
I love the movement and unpredictability you can add to your sounds with Obsidian. You can use it to add subtle texture and width to synths or go full chaos with automated transitions and risers.
The spectral delay, in particular, can create some cool rhythmic feedback patterns that evolve over time.
There’s also a randomize function if you’re stuck for ideas, but I much prefer loading up a sample or a loop and adjusting the XY pad until I find the right flavor.
