KV331 Audio has released SynthMaster 3 Free Player, a beta version of their new preset-focused synth plugin for Windows and macOS.
The Free Player is a streamlined edition of SynthMaster 3 Player. It’s tailor-made for producers who prefer using presets over designing patches from scratch.
So, if you enjoy tinkering with synth knobs and sliders, look into something like Surge XT or Vital Free. But if you like instant access to usable synth sounds, this one’s for you.
SynthMaster 3 Free Player comes with 500 curated factory presets, handpicked from the extensive libraries of SynthMaster One, SynthMaster 2, and SynthMaster 3.
While the free version is an excellent introduction to the SynthMaster ecosystem, the full SynthMaster 3 Player takes things up a notch with all 4400 factory presets across the company’s flagship synths.
The full SynthMaster Player is available for an introductory price of $39, and you can upgrade directly from within the Free Player plugin itself.
What you get in the free version is still pretty impressive, especially for a freebie. The sound quality is excellent, as expected from SynthMaster (I use it a lot on my iPad, by the way).
There’s a solid mix of bread-and-butter synths, rich pads, plucky leads, acoustic-style instruments, and experimental textures. Presets are organized into categories like bass, keys, drums, FX, and ambiance.
The built-in preset preview system lets you quickly audition sounds by hovering over a small play button. There’s no need to load the patch or even touch your MIDI keyboard, which is pretty cool if you’re in a hurry.
That said, editing is super limited in the Free Player, although not non-existent. While you can’t dive into the inner workings of oscillators or modulation sources, you can still tweak arpeggiators, sequencers, layer settings, keyboard zones, and effects like reverb and chorus.
Each instance supports up to 16 layers, with intuitive Track and Mix views to shape your sound further. And if you want more sounds, there’s an in-app shop for expansions and upgrades.
I’ve tested the plugin in Studio One on my M1 MacBook Air, and CPU usage is minimal. The presets loaded quickly, and playback remained smooth even when stacking effects. This makes it a great pick for producers working on less powerful systems.
If you already own SynthMaster 3, you won’t need the Free Player, but for newcomers, it’s a generous intro to a powerful synth engine. And if you end up wanting more, upgrading is just a few clicks away.
