Lunacy Audio has released Haze and Filter, two free audio effect plugins for macOS and Windows.
I’m familiar with Lunacy Audio’s work based on their premium plugins like Cube Mini and BEAM 2.0. Both are among my go-to tools for cinematic sound design, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that they’ve released a pair of free plugins as well.
The GUI design in Lunacy Audio’s commercial plugins is very eye-catching, and the developer brings that same look to their new freebies. Although simpler than the company’s flagship products in terms of features and versatility, Haze and Filter are anything but basic, especially in the design department.
Both freebies feature the developer’s signature sleek blue-purple interfaces, with interactive visualizations that make using them feel inspiring and intuitive. I know most producers aren’t such suckers for bomabstic GUI designs like me, but I love using plugins that look this good.
Lunacy Audio Haze
Haze is a dreamy modulation effect that blends chorus, phasing, and reverb into a lush and atmospheric texture generator.
The so-called “Spectral Dispersion” engine sets Haze apart from similar modulation multi-effects. It smears and resonates the signal and can go from subtle stereo movement to evolving soundscapes with just a few clicks.
Controls for decay, density, and stereo spread give you a lot of flexibility for shaping the space, while additional parameters like Motion and Smear add evolving movement and complexity.
It’s very useful for adding a gentle shimmer or full-on ambient warble to pads, textures, leads, and other elements.
Lunacy Audio Filter
Filter is a versatile filtering tool which includes all the classics—lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and more—but also throws in creative choices like formant and comb filters.
You also get features like slope scaling (up to 8x), stereo image shaping, and a note snapping option (which locks filter frequency to musical pitches). This combination of basic and advanced (but optional) features makes it ideal for both surgical EQ tasks and more experimental sound design.
