M.I.A. has pointed out that Tyler, the Creator and Doechii‘s new song, “Get Right,” might be a carbon copy of an older track of hers.
On Wednesday (June 25), the British musician saw a comment on X shared by user @_rawLAW, who pointed out that “Get Right” sounds like M.I.A.’s 2007 song “Boyz.”
“It kind of gives me ‘Boyz’ by @MIAuniverse,” the X user wrote, sharing a clip of Tyler and Doechii’s song playing during the Louis Vuitton SS26 show in Paris earlier this week.
Responding to the observation, M.I.A. wrote: “Bro it’s literally my song,” alongside a selfie clip of herself while the song plays in the background.
“Boyz” appeared on M.I.A.’s 2007 album, Kala. The song was produced by M.I.A. and Switch, while “Get Right” was produced by Pharrell.
Neither Tyler, Doechii, nor Pharrell have responded to M.I.A.’s comments about “Get Right,” the second collaboration between Doechii and Tyler, following Chromakopia song “Balloon.”
M.I.A. and Pharrell have also previously worked together on N.E.R.D.’s 2017 No One Ever Really Dies album cut, “Kites.”
Earlier this year, comments M.I.A. made about another super producer resurfaced starting a bit of a debate online.
In a 2024 interview with the PBD Podcast that recently resurfaced, M.I.A. credited Kanye West with playing a pivotal role in Jay-Z’s success as a rapper.
She asserted that Ye brought “creativity” to Jay’s artistry. She acknowledged that Hov was more of a “businessman,” but Ye was more “artistic.”
“He added the creativity to that whole thing,” M.I.A. said about Ye’s working relationship with Jay. “I don’t think they give him enough respect and dues. Yes, Jay-Z was more of a businessman. Kanye was always the artistic one. He’s the creative one. I connected with that, and Jay-Z obviously had the clout and the reputation. But, I saw that they both represented two different dynamics.”
