It’s not every day you see pop stars and rappers trading stage costumes for academic caps and gowns. Yet in recent years, universities have been lining up to honor chart-topping musicians with honorary doctorate degrees. These ceremonial honors don’t require writing dissertations or passing exams. Instead, they recognize cultural impact and contributions. From Yankee Stadium to Oxford and Cambridge halls, here are six famous artists who can now technically call themselves “Doctor,” and why those honors are about more than just a fancy title.

    Taylor Swift

When Taylor Swift received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from New York University in May 2022, social media erupted with glee over “Dr. Swift.” The 14-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter donned NYU’s purple regalia and took the podium at Yankee Stadium as the Commencement Speaker. For a superstar who never attended a traditional college, the moment symbolised how far her cultural credentials have come. The cultural impact was clear: Swift’s storytelling and business savvy have influenced academia enough to spawn college courses about her. All in all, Taylor Swift’s honorary doctorate showcases how pop music is being recognised for shaping society and inspiring a generation.

    Pharell Williams

Not many commencement speakers end up crying tears of joy on stage, but that’s what happened when Pharrell Williams received an honorary doctorate from Norfolk State University in 2021. The hit-making producer behind “Happy” and countless pop anthems returned to his Virginia hometown to address graduates and was surprised with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Culturally, this moment was a celebration of community. Pharrell used his platform to encourage young graduates to invest in their city and to support local causes. For fans, it’s heartwarming: the man who gave us feel-good songs and philanthropy got a feel-good honour in return. And Pharrell’s beaming face in cap and gown proved that even music superstars cherish these academic nods, because it’s about legacy and hometown pride as much as personal achievement.

    Usher

In 2023, eight-time Grammy Award winner Usher was honoured with an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music. Usher Raymond IV, the R&B superstar known for setting charts ablaze with hits like “Yeah!” and “U Remind Me,” earned a new title in 2023: Doctor, courtesy of the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Berklee honoured him for his invaluable contributions to music and philanthropy. Indeed, beyond selling 80 million records, Usher has mentored young artists (even serving as a coach on The Voice) and raised millions for youth charities. An artist who mastered the art of performance is now celebrated in the halls of learning, suggesting that creativity and academic excellence go hand in hand. In short, Doctor Usher is in the house, reminding us that hard work and talent ultimately get their ovation.

    Stormzy

British rapper Stormzy went from delivering powerful lyrics about the streets of London to standing in the halls of Cambridge University with an honorary doctorate in Law. In 2025, the University of Cambridge awarded Stormzy the degree in recognition of his efforts to open doors for black students. The grime icon has funded scholarships that helped dozens of Black British youths attend Cambridge, which is a transformative initiative that academia couldn’t ignore. In fact, this was Stormzy’s second honorary degree: he’d already received one from the University of Exeter in 2022 for his education philanthropy. Culturally, Stormzy’s honours mark a powerful crossover: a rapper from Croydon being lauded by the UK’s oldest universities is a sign of progress in diversifying academia’s ranks. It shines a spotlight on how artists can leverage fame for social change.

    Pink Pantheress

Internet-bred pop sensation PinkPantheress is only in her early 20s, but she’s already an honorary Doctor of Music. In July 2025, the University of Kent (in her home county) awarded PinkPantheress this honour for her achievements in music in the digital age. The singer-producer first gained fame on TikTok with viral bedroom pop hits, so seeing her in a cathedral receiving a doctorate was a full-circle moment for the TikTok generation. The university noted her innovative contribution to music in the streaming era, effectively acknowledging that viral TikTok songs can have lasting cultural merit. Dr. PinkPantheress sounds like a quirky comic-book character, but it’s also proof that the establishment is paying attention to youth-driven creative movements.

    Ringo Starr

When you’ve been a Beatle, you might think there are no accolades left, but Ringo Starr found one more for his collection. In June 2022, at age 81, Ringo strolled onto the Berklee College of Music campus to receive an honorary doctorate, proving it’s never too late to become “Dr. Starr”. The legendary drummer’s ceremony doubled as a tribute concert, complete with Berklee students playing Beatles classics and Ringo himself jamming on a replica of his 1960s drum kit. Culturally, Ringo’s honorary Doctor of Music degree is a bow to an entire era. It acknowledges that the influence of The Beatles on popular culture is as educational as any syllabus. Ringo’s honorary doctorate shows that even after decades of fame, artists treasure these honours; not for the title, but for what it represents: a lifetime of cultural impact coming full circle.

In the end, these six “doctors” of music remind us that music and academia aren’t worlds apart at all. When a university honors a musician, it’s validating art as a form of knowledge that shapes how we see the world. But these honors also spotlight something even more important: music is a serious craft, one worthy of study, investment, and dedication. If their stories inspire you, why not take it to the next level with our BA (Hons) Music Production & Vocal Performance degree, where it isn’t just about hitting the right notes or learning software, it’s about understanding the industry, refining your voice, and building a sustainable creative career.
