If you’ve followed 2B Played Music releases for a while, you’ll know they regularly turn their QFX series plugins into limited-time freebies around Black Friday and the Christmas holidays. We’ve covered them numerous times on BPB, most recently the QFX Wax in October.
That said, I don’t recall QFX Mash being free before, so this feels like a good opportunity to grab it if you like the developer’s minimalist approach to plugin design.
QFX Mash has a simple concept. You degrade the audio and then add a bit of space to make it sound bigger. It’s basically a hybrid one-knob effect that blends bitcrushing with short delay and reverb.
That’s an unusual combination, because bitcrushers are usually about harsh distortion and lo-fi grit, while delay and reverb are typically used to add space and depth. Here, both ideas coexist, but the contrast is intentional; it’s pretty much what makes the plugin interesting.
As for the controls, there’s a single main knob that controls the overall intensity of the degradation. On top of that, you can dial in the amount of delay and reverb you want, letting you decide whether the degraded sound stays tight or expands into something more atmospheric.
I used a similar combination in BPB’s freeware spring reverb plugin called BPB Dirty Spring. So if you like blending a bitcrusher with reverb, give it a try.
In practice, QFX Mash sounds pretty good on synths (especially plucks) and drums. Percussive sounds often benefit from a bit of bitcrushing, and adding a touch of reverb or delay afterward can make those crushed sounds feel larger and more intentional rather than purely destructive.
Obviously, the plugin is extremely easy to use, with a minimal interface and no distractions. You can save and recall your own presets, although pretty much any combination can be dialed in manually in seconds.
